Ahiflower® for Equine
All begins with the seeds
Natures Crops International is committed to ongoing development of the Ahiflower crop, and through our long-term partnership which has been running over a decade with NIAB (Cambridge) we are developing new varieties, trialling new agronomic techniques, registering crop protection products and continually improving performance.
Ahiflower provides British farmers with a sustainable crop that has benefits for soil health and biodiversity.
Ahiflower helps the equestrian industry to be more sustainable. Both the British Horseracing Association (BHA) and the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) have stated their aim to demonstrate that equestrian sport can be more sustainable and Ahiflower offers a great source of nutrition from regeneratively farmed origins, particularly when compared to marine origin omega-3 oils.
Tried and Tested
Ahiflower has become a popular supplement for horses in the USA. Purina Horse Feeds have been instrumental in demonstrating its benefits, particularly in comparison to other popular sources of omega 3 such as flax oil better known as linseed in the UK.
“When we were doing our trials, we put Ahiflower oil right up against flax oil since it’s the most readily available omega-3 rich plant oil that people can buy at the feed store. We found that Ahiflower oil converts to EPA in the body, which would traditionally only be sourced from fish or algal oil. It’s the first plant oil we’ve ever seen that actually converts to EPA in the horse in appreciable amounts. We can measure Ahiflower’s EPA increases not only in the blood but in the muscle. We never thought that could happen because we’ve looked at studies with flaxseed oil and it didn’t look like much was going on. But with Ahiflower oil in horses, beneficial compounds like EPA are forming and contributing to overall health.” – Dr. Mary Beth Gordon, Director of Equine Research and New Product Development at Purina Mills
